Escape the heat of high summer and retreat to the cool, enchanting land of Norway, where the rivers are cold and the sky is clear. This retreat is all about rediscovering the yogic practices of asana, pranayama, and chanting through deep, rhythmic breath. We begin with an exploration of the five prānas or "vital airs." We learn how these work together to cycle energy through the body, and how we can support this cycle with the somatic practices of yoga. More specifically, we learn how to support the internal process of Hatha Pāka, or "sudden absorption" that is so central to traditional Hatha Yoga. This is the process that gradually releases us from the clutches of conditioned thought. When we understand how the process works, we can use our yoga practices to engage the process consciously, pointedly, and with loving attention. With assiduous practice, we can begin to connect to the inherent bliss of deep, conscious breath.
Program
Our mornings begin with Mysore-style asana practice, from 7am to 10am, followed by brunch. From 12 to 2pm, we have an afternoon workshop on philosophy and technique. We leave the mid-afternoons free for exploring the breathtaking surroundings. Before the evening meal, we gather again for pranayama and chanting.
Please note that asana practices will be assisted but self-directed (not guided). Ashtanga Vinyasa will be the predominating style, but related styles are also welcome, and adaptive variations on the Ashtanga theme are fully supported.

About Ty
Ty has an unwavering love for this unique somatic discipline, which he began practicing back in 2005. Drawing on his formal background in philosophy (PhD University of Virginia), Ty has an unusual power for illuminating the internal dynamics of yoga. He sees yoga as conscious participation in archetypal patterns of human development, which he is ever drawn to explore.
Many inspiring people taught Ty about yoga, but the deepest and most lasting imprints have been made by Jennifer Eliot (his first teacher), David Garrigues (his second), Mary Taylor and Richard Freeman (his most recent), to all of whom he is forever grateful. These teachers all did something remarkable, which is to disappear and allow the spirit of yoga to stand forth from within.
Ty now shares his love of yoga in studios and retreat centers around the world. His passion is to share the brilliance of yoga with anyone who wants to learn.
